Support Paulista and Support Our Local Schools!
For the last six years, we have been working to make Paulista a reality. And for the last year, through the finalizing of our business plan, the signing of our lease, and now as we near completion of our buildout, we have been raising funds to pay for our opening. To this point, every cent we have raised has come directly from our own pockets and from generous loans from our families. No wealthy investors, no seed money, and no venture capitalists have been involved in funding Paulista. And any day now, we hope to be approved for an SBA loan that will help tremendously as we head towards our grand opening in September.
But unfortunately, this still leaves us strapped for cash prior to opening day and the beginning of our revenue stream. This is despite the fact that we haggle over every quote we are given, spend time agonizing over every extra nail that is hammered into every redesigned area of the restaurant, and do all we can not to take shortcuts on the most important aspects of our restaurant while at the same time being as frugal as possible. Everyone told us that no matter how much money we raised for Paulista, in the end, we would still need more. And as it turns out, they were right.
So, we are reaching out to you – our friends, our neighbors, our supporters. We are hoping that you are as excited as we are about the prospect of a true neighborhood restaurant and gathering place for the community in Oakland’s Glenview district. That you will choose to support our fundraising campaign because you share our belief that this is a tremendous need – we need a place to come together over great food, great coffee, and great local craft beer and wine.
It’s also important to explain why we have chosen to run our fundraising campaign ourselves, rather than going through Kickstarter, Indiegogo, Rockethub, etc. While these are great companies that have helped countless businesses, they also have restrictions and come at a cost. If we were to use Kickstarter, for example, we would ultimately have to give them about 10% of the money we raise. So, instead of giving Kickstarter 10% of our funding total, we will give 10% of whatever we raise during the fundraising period to the schools that you, our donors, choose to support. Both of us and our wives have been deeply involved in local education for decades, and our kids all go to local Oakland schools. This is our way of connecting our vision of a true community restaurant to our most precious resource – our children and their education.
If you decide to support us, you will be helping us purchase our final crucial pieces of equipment that will help us be the best restaurant and taproom that we can be, as well as put the finishing touches on our buildout. We are so excited about the space we are creating here for our neighborhood, and hope that helping us through the final steps of our buildout is something that our supporters can get behind.
Thanks so much for your support!
